Sailboat Retro template: free online board

The team is a sailboat heading for an island — your goal. The wind pushes you forward, anchors hold you back, and rocks are hidden dangers below the surface: not a problem today, but trouble if you ignore them. It looks back and forward at the same time.

When to use it

What goes in each column

🏝️ Island — our goal

Where are we sailing to? What are we working toward? For example: Launch the mobile app before the summer campaign

🌬️ Wind — what pushes us

What is pushing us forward? For example: Design system makes new screens fast

⚓ Anchors — what holds us back

What is slowing us down or holding us back? For example: Waiting days for API access approval

🪨 Rocks — risks ahead

What risks lie ahead that haven’t hit us yet? For example: Only one person knows the payment code

How to run it

  1. Explain the boat (5 minutes). “Our team is this little sailboat. Today we look both behind us and ahead of us.”
  2. Name the island (10 minutes). “Where are we sailing to? Write what our destination is, then we’ll group and agree on it.”
  3. Silent writing (10 minutes). “Now add cards to all four areas: what pushes us, what holds us back, what risks lie ahead.”
  4. Discuss each area (15 minutes). “Let’s reveal and group similar cards. Don’t skip the wind — what’s working deserves time too.”
  5. Vote (5 minutes). “Vote for the most important items in each area.”
  6. Plan actions (10 minutes). “How do we catch more wind, cut the heaviest anchor, and steer around the top risk? Who owns each?”
