The Good - The Bad - The Ugly template: free online board

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly separates ordinary problems from the awkward truths nobody wants to raise. The Ugly column gives people permission to name them, and the film reference keeps the tone light enough to do it.

When to use it

What goes in each column

The good

What worked and should be repeated?

The bad

What did not go to plan?

The ugly

What is the uncomfortable truth we have been avoiding?

How to run it

  1. Set the scene. Remind everyone of the goal and agree that this is about the work, not about blame.
  2. Write in silence. Everyone adds cards on their own, so quieter people are heard.
  3. Group and vote. Merge similar cards, then vote on what matters most.
  4. Discuss. Start with the most-voted cards and work down.
  5. Agree on actions. Finish with a small number of actions, each with an owner and a date.

Watch out for

The Ugly column needs safety. If people fear blame, run it with anonymous cards and agree beforehand to discuss systems, not people.
